Like in tennis, repetitive movement of your forearms during gripping activities and overexertion during work or exercise can aggravate the tendon that attaches the muscles to your elbow creating Tennis Elbow, or lateral epicondylitis. This leads to pain, inflammation, and weakness in your forearm during regular activity.
With Tennis Elbow, we need to help relax the muscle, take some stress off of the ligament that’s pulling on the bone, and facilitate the healing process.
Chiropractic care can help by assessing the affected elbow, we can help by performing some massage, stretching the area out, mobilizing the bones in the elbow down to the wrist with chiropractic adjustments, and teach you some general stretches to help reduce some stress on that muscle.
Also, to help the body heal and modulate pain and inflammation, we may recommend supplements like Omega 3 Fish Oils, Turmero (turmeric supplement), and Formula 303 – each available at our clinic.
At Brown Family Chiropractic, we see a lot of tennis elbow, also known as lateral epicondylitis. Tennis elbow can be a mild pain or intense pain in the elbow area as a result of repetitive gripping activities or movements. As you can imagine tennis is a repetitive sport and this is a common injury seen in tennis athletes. During the repetitive movement, the ligament that attaches the muscle to your elbow bone becomes stressed causing inflammation and then presents with pain during movements.
Chiropractic Care
For Tennis Elbow what we need to do is help relax the muscle, take some stress off of the ligament that’s pulling on the bone, and facilitate the healing process. After assessing the affected elbow, we can help by performing some massage, stretching the area out, mobilizing the bones in the elbow down to the wrist with chiropractic adjustments, and teach you some general stretches to help reduce some stress on that muscle.
We also modify daily activities so you’re not constantly aggravating it all day long. You need to allow the elbow to heal before you can start moving it again. We might suggest some braces that you can get at Walgreens or Walmart generally that wrap around your elbow to take some stress off of that tendon.
We also have another therapy called cold laser. This uses red light and infrared light that penetrate the skin, speed up the healing process, and reduce pain and inflammation.
Nutritional Care
Inflammation and pain are often accompanied with Tennis Elbow, so we also suggest nutritional supplementation to help modulate those reactions. We hate to recommend ibuprofen as a first line of defense because it has a lot of side effects and it can cause internal bleeding with long-term use.
Natural ways to reduce inflammation may include fish oils with quality omega-3s and Turmeric. Formula 303 may be a great supplement for reducing pain. Essential oils like Lemongrass may help to reduce muscle aches and inflammation associated with tennis elbow.
If you have tennis elbow or lateral epicondylitis give our office a call. We’d love to work with you and start your process of healing today.
